In vitro stem cell testing can predict the potential for disturbance of correct embryonic development by candidate drugs. Metabolomics focuses on identifying metabolite patterns associated with toxicity mechanisms, cellular responses and biomarkers of biological processes associated with disease.

Metabolomics results can be used to set acceptable exposure levels, and stem cell testing can now reliably identify embryotoxicity on cell lines by in vitro methods. Testing is performed on induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS cells).
